External Access Guide

⚠️ While the following setup is more involved than accessing via the internet normally, it is simple to follow. Please read carefully and don't miss any steps!

Secure Network Connection (Tailscale)

❔ What is Tailscale?

Tailscale is a secure virtual private network that provides isolated access to network resources such as my media server. This ensures zero-trust security and prevents exposure to the public internet.

🧾 Setup Instructions

    Create Tailscale Account Create or sign in to your personal Tailscale account. Authenticating via a Google account is preferable. This will create a personal "Tailnet" for yourself, but you don't need to configure anything else as you will just be adding my shared node:

    Link to the Shared Media Node (booty-bay) Click the following server-sharing invitation link (replace NODE_SHARING_CODE with your actual node-sharing code) - this will add the machine to your Tailnet:

    Download the Client Install the Tailscale application on your playback device (available for Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, Fire TV, and Apple TV). I recommend installing this on your phone or PC first to test access:

    Connect Ensure the Tailscale application is running and showing a connected status on your device before proceeding. In order to access the media server you have to be connected to Tailscale, but you can turn it off when not in use.

    Create your Jellyfin Account Now that you're connected to Tailscale, click the following link (replace JELLYFIN_INVITATION_CODE with your actual invitation code) to create your Jellyfin account and follow the setup wizard:

Jellyfin is a free, open-source media server that lets people share their film and TV libraries with friends and family.

🌐 Watch Anywhere

Tailscale and Jellyfin work on almost any device or web browser. The official Jellyfin apps provide the simplest and most reliable experience.

🖥️ On PC/Mac: I highly recommend accessing via the web using Google Chrome.

📺 On Smart TVs: Try downloading the "Wholphin" app if it is available in your TV app store.

Once you've reached the login page on your app, you will be prompted to add a server. Enter:

Sign in with the user account you created earlier in the wizard setup step.
